A Shanghai-based InsurTech company just closed a $154.7 million private placement without touching a dollar of fiat. Zhibao took the entire raise in Bitcoin, 2,380 BTC, marking one of the first instances of a Chinese firm pivoting to a crypto treasury at scale.
The structure is straightforward: investors contributed Bitcoin directly rather than converting cash at close. That’s a meaningful shift from the typical playbook, where companies accept fiat and optionally convert to crypto post-funding. Here, the allocation happened on-chain from the start.
Treasury Strategy in a Restricted Market
China’s crypto policy has been hostile since the 2021 mining ban and exchange crackdowns. Retail trading remains outlawed, and institutional onramps are scarce. Zhibao’s ability to execute a nine-figure Bitcoin raise suggests either offshore structuring or participation from entities operating beyond mainland enforcement, or both.
InsurTech isn’t an obvious sector for crypto treasury adoption. The category typically centers on underwriting automation, claims processing, and risk modeling, not balance sheet speculation. Zhibao’s move implies either a long-term conviction trade or an investor base that prefers settling in BTC over yuan or dollars. Either way, it’s a departure from the risk-averse capital allocation you’d expect from an insurance-adjacent business.
Fundraising Rails Shifting
The mechanics here matter more than the headline number. Private placements funded entirely in crypto compress settlement time, eliminate FX conversion risk, and sidestep traditional banking rails. That’s appealing for cross-border deals, especially when the issuer wants to hold the asset raised rather than immediately liquidate.
It’s also a template. If a Shanghai firm can structure a $154.7 million round this way, others in jurisdictions with clearer regulatory frameworks will follow. The question isn’t whether Bitcoin-denominated fundraising scales, it’s how long before it becomes routine for companies that want exposure without buying on the open market.
Zhibao now holds 2,380 BTC. At current prices, that’s a treasury allocation larger than most publicly traded microcap miners. For an InsurTech firm, it’s a bet that Bitcoin appreciation outpaces whatever yield they’d earn in traditional reserves. The insurance industry runs on duration matching and predictable cash flows. This is the opposite.
